The History of the Luna Compassionate Association

The Luna Compassionate Association Limited (LCA) was founded by Messrs’ Andrew Campbell & Chet Hylton in the year 2010.

As youths, they were always motivated to give back to their community, situated in the rural cool hills of Luna District, St. Mary. When they migrated to the USA, they welcomed the opportunity to give back to the Luna community they love so much.  They would often gather with other persons who migrated from Luna (Lunaites) and talk about how they could make a positive impact on their community.  Everyone was always passionate and anxious to be a part of the improvement solution for Luna.

One Sunday, they all met and Chet encouraged Andrew to share his ideas with the group, about ways in which they could positively impact Luna. Andrew did just that and by the time the meeting ended all were excited about the ideas and ready to make an impact on their community.

For the Inaugural event, they had no fundraiser, so it was funded mainly with their personal finances and contributions solicited from other Lunaites.  Andrew’s mom, Mrs. Gwendolyn Williams has been one of their biggest cheer leaders, who also gave invaluable support to the success of each event. That year, they were able to provide about 200 back to school packages for the children of Luna. Despite the challenges they faced, the tight work schedule, the limited financial resources, the cold and freezing weather, they persevered and were able to successfully champion the worthy cause, hosting fundraising events each year thereafter, and soliciting contribution from persons locally and abroad.

The Luna Compassionate Association was registered as a non-profit entity on December 18, 2012, in the State of New Jersey, USA.  In the year 2016, with the assistance of a support team of volunteers and the Board of Directors, the Luna Compassionate Association was registered as a Limited liability company with the Companies Office of Jamaica and as a Charitable Organisation with the Department of

Co-operative and Friendly Societies in Jamaica.

Each year’s event steadily increased to approximately 600 back to school packages for the children of Luna and surrounding communities. These gifts always bring joy to the faces of the kids and some financial relief to the parents who sometimes did not know where the money was coming from to purchase back to school supplies.  The LCA acts of benevolence also include educational grants and book vouchers for high achievers, Christmas treats, and distribution of food packages at least twice per year for the community members who are in need.
